Dare to Speak Swedish - Challenge nine: Swedish Terms

Helsingfors universitets personal och studenter talar utanför Huvudbyggnaden.
Bulletin 30.3.2026

For the Swedish language to be used in society, we need Swedish terms and we need more people to learn Swedish terms and what they mean. Even native speakers today read a lot in English. Share a Swedish term that you have recently learned. Talk about a term you have encountered in Finnish or English that you would like to learn the Swedish term for. Do you have any ideas on how we can collectively increase the use of Swedish terminology at the university? How do you prefer/best learn Swedish terms?

If you know the Swedish term for any of the terms that others have mentioned they want to learn in Moodle, feel free to respond to their posts and share what you think the term is.

Tell in Moodle what you have tried and how you succeeded.

Dare to speak Swedish campaign

The year 2025 was the theme year for Language Aware Everyday Life at the University of Helsinki, which has inspired the Dare to Speak Swedish campaign that continues until the end of the academic year. The aim of the campaign is to strengthen the position of Swedish at the university and encourage both students and staff to use Swedish in everyday life. Languages that are seen and heard are languages that are learned!

The campaign consists of video greetings from staff and students, news on Flamma and the Study Service, challenges on Moodle and events at the campuses.

How you can participate in the campaign

  1. Visit Moodle: Get practical tips on how to use Swedish. Here you will also find all the video greetings.
  2. Take on a challenge: Every two weeks or so, we publish a new challenge that encourages the use of Swedish. Most of the challenges are for everyone, but some are specifically aimed at staff and students. Check them out on Moodle!
  3. Initiate events: Start something in Swedish during the campaign - it can be anything from coffee breaks to lunches.
  4. Share your language skills: Tell us about the languages you understand, speak or want to learn. Feel free to update your Flamma profile!
  5. Pick up a pin/sticker/overalls patch: Show your support for the campaign by picking up a pin, sticker or halo. They are available in the Guidance Corner of the Main library in the Kaisa house and at the campuses.
  6. Promote language awareness and use: Boldly use multiple languages and encourage others to do the same.
